1958 - 2026:  Celebrating 68 Years

Friday saw the last day of merit badge sessions in the morning, and then the fabled Land and Sea games in the afternoon- an Olympic style competition featuring athletic or quasi-athletic events- many with a silly, scouty twist. Thursday found us once again making the most of the packed programming schedule. Everyone is tired, but it is what I would call "happy tired." The truth is, if you don't go home from summer camp running on fumes, you probably didn't do it right! Before I get into the day, since I may not get a final blog post done until everyone is home and recuperating, I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the troop 270 team and superstars that make this whole escapade possible. Good evening everyone! The amount of stuff we've packed into these past 3 and a half days is really astonishing. Our daily schedule allows for down time from about 1-2 pm, 5-5:15 pm, and 6:30-7 pm. Everything else is programming, and I think we're all hitting the point where we can't remember if something happened Sunday afternoon or just this morning. On the bright side, I think the worst of the fatigue is behind us- I find that seems to peak Monday night into Tuesday morn

With the second full day of merit badge sessions upon us, everyone starts to settle in to the familiar daily routine. Breakfast, morning sessions, lunch, afternoon session, 3-5 pm free time, dinner, then 7-9 pm (or later) evening sessions. Today the first year scouts learned about flag etiquette, including how to raise, lower, and properly fold the flag. Our troop woke up this morning and never looked back. It feels like we've been here for 3 days with all the stuff (and all the weather) we experienced today. Our acting SPL Sebastian has the troop running so smoothly that we scored a 98 out of 100 on our very first campsite inspection this morning, quite a feat for the first day. We had some thunder and rain in the early afternoon, but it passed by 3 pm leaving behind a beautiful, sunny afternoon and the scouts took full ad

Everything went smoothly for our first afternoon and evening at camp. After everyone arrived, we took a tour of the camp which included orientation for the target ranges, boating, waterfront, and the dining hall. While at the waterfront, a handful of our scouts took their swim tests. Attendance at camp this week is relatively light, partially due to the National Jamboree happening. So we should have plenty of opportunity to take part in the open activities later this week.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to the Troop 270 scouts and parent volunteers who dedicated their Saturday morning to beautifying the grounds of the Newtown Congregational Church. As our charter organization, the church plays a vital role in the success of our troop. They generously provide us with the space we need to hold our weekly meetings, a secure location to store our troop supplies, and a safe place to park our trailer. As I sit here in the break room at the Rock Spot Climbing Gym in Wallingford just after midnight, the rest of the troop is (hopefully) sound asleep just outside the door in the climbing gym- their sleeping bags laid out on the padded floor at the base of the climbing and bouldering walls. On Thursday, February 26th, we gathered for one of the most meaningful and time-honored traditions in Cub Scouting: the Crossing Over Ceremony. This milestone marks the moment when Arrow of Light scouts take their next step on the Scouting trail, leaving behind their Cub Scout ranks and officially beginning their journey into Scouts BSA. Scouts from BSA Troop 270 of Newtown, CT, attended a campout this past weekend at the John Sherman Hoyt Training Center and Scout Reservation in Redding, CT. The main activity was rifle shooting instructional training. We were also happy to be joined by several of our newly minted crossover scouts. This was also the last campout led by our outgoing SPL, Sandor. As we all know, we had a "real" winter this year, so our scouts arrived to find a wonderland of snow awaiting them.

Our troop recently experienced an exciting period of growth and activity. We welcomed seven new crossover scouts who have already begun making their mark. At their second meeting, these new members participated in troop elections, helping shape leadership for the next six months. This process gave them a valuable introduction to responsibility, teamwork, and decision-making. As a result of the elections, we have new leadership in place. Boy scouts and leaders from Scouts BSA Troop 270 took advantage of a beautiful fall day to support our charter org, the Newtown Congregational Church. As part of our annual fall cleanup day, the troop worked alongside other volunteers to rake leaves, clean up the Memorial Garden, and polish pews in the main sanctuary. Our partnership with NCC continues to benefit our troop and the church, but also provides our scouts to learn and understand the value of giving back.

This past weekend, our troop organized a FANTASTIC campout at Camp Sequassen! The plan was to spend Saturday morning building rockets, launch them in the afternoon, and to invite the Webelos and AOL scouts from Pack 270 and 470 to join us. Perhaps the only thing that was more impressive than the success of our campout was the weather, as we were treated to a beautiful early Fall weekend with highs in the 70's and low's at night in the upper 50's.
