Digging our Way In

Scouts from BSA Troop 270 of Newtown, CT, attended a campout this past weekend at the John Sherman Hoyt Training Center and Scout Reservation in Redding, CT. The main activity was rifle shooting instructional training. We were also happy to be joined by several of our newly minted crossover scouts. This was also the last campout led by our outgoing SPL, Sandor.

As we all know, we had a "real" winter this year, so our scouts arrived to find a wonderland of snow awaiting them. Our scouts and leaders dug out areas to pitch tents, set up the cooking area, and prepare the fire pit. We settled into our tents for the night to the sound of train whistles passing by.

On Saturday, we headed to the target range. Jeff Timmons and his team of instructors, including our own ASM Steve Ladanyi, led the scouts through a comprehensive course on safety and rifle techniques. Then it was on to target practice, with the goal of grouping all shots within a small area no larger than a quarter. All of our scouts and leaders demonstrated excellent skill, including those who were using rifles for the first time. Our Scoutmaster, Mr. Hoyack, even demonstrated some particular skill at creating a familiar silhouette.

While scouts were enjoying the range, yours truly was enjoying a campfire and watching a beef stew cook over the fire. Mr. Tenezaca was super helpful in providing fresh wood (scroll down to see him in action).

As evening approached, scouts returned to camp to enjoy warm patrol dinners before breaking camp and heading home.

Thank you to Jeff's team and all of the leaders who made this campout possible.
