Summer camp is off to a great start this year. We are a small but powerful and eager crew this year with only 10 scouts in attendance. Camp this year is being led by SPL Henry along with his ASPLs Sandor and Liam. Mr. Linnetz is acting Scoutmaster and is joined by myself, Mr. Blatter, all week, and with Mr. McCoy, Mr. O'Neil getting us going as an adult leader crew. We will be backed up by additional leaders later in the week.
Our campsite, Jerome, is really nice and is tucked away behind and below the Nature Lodge in Lower Sequassen. We are very close to the bath and showers here, and just a short walk to Clark Field and the Dining Hall. This site was refurbished a couple of years ago as a lean-to site. The lean-tos are really nice and there is also a climate controlled cabin for leaders to use if they wish.
Our troop arrived shortly after lunch on Sunday and immediately jumped into camp prep, planning, a camp tour, and opening ceremony. We ended the day with a staff campfire program.
We just finished our first full day of camp on Monday. It was a hot day, not as humid as Sunday, but hotter although thankfully no rain. Today scouts started their first day of Merit Badge classes, taking 3 classes in the morning and 1 class in the afternoon. Starting at 3pm they have free time which also includes a variety of activities including "Camp Challenges". The Challenges are important for troops to participate in order to work towards troop awards such as Honor Patrol and Honor Troop. Even if we do not acheive such honors, participation greatly enhances the experiences of our scouts.
The pictures below highlight some of the activities of this first day. Our leaders will do our best to capture these amazing moments. Please keep in mind, camp is big (and hilly!) so while we will do our best, we may not get pictures of all scouts every day.
Welcome to Camp!
Cowboy hats are the theme of the week apparently. On Sunday, Henry kicked off the week with some planning followed later in the day with the Opening Flag Ceremony. You can see some nice pics of our campsite as well.
Monday - Merit Badges and Fun
Monday started out with Polar Bear plunge for some, fishing for others, while some got to sleep in. After opening flags and breakfast, Caden headed off to Wilderness Patrol while the rest of the troop headed to Merit Badge classes. Highlights include:
Henry and Simon in Auto Maintenance at STEM
Swimming for Liam, Logan, and Quinten
Home Repairs for Simon at STEM
Leatherwork for Sam
Environmental Science for Leo, Quinten, and Sandor
Drill, Lunch, and Afternoon Activities
Right before lunch, staff held the weekly emergency drill where EVERY scout and leader has to report to Clark Field. After lunch, Henry held an impromptu troop meeting to make sure everyone knew where they had to go in the afternoon and ensure the Camp Challenges were covered.
Mr. McCoy and I headed to the ranges to try to catch up with scouts. Eventually, we found Logan with some 870 scouts including Claire Hoyack. Before that, Mr. McCoy and I enjoyed some target practice of their own. They then headed to the long distance archery range for some "long shots", one of which landed for Mr. McCoy and two of which for I which earned him 50 SEQ bucks for the troop! We then caught up with Simon at the shotgun range where he expertly disintegrated a whole bunch of clay targets.
All Camp Challenges
The evening ended with two challenges, the Conquistador event and the Rube Goldberg competition. For the Conquistador event, Sandor, Elliott, and Quinten participated in canoeing without oars, which was highlighted with Sandor donning a Hot Dog suit. In the Rube Goldbery competition, Sam and Leo built a device to knock down a wooden block.
Day complete
With our first full day complete, scouts and leaders showered (well, some of us) and headed off to bed for a well-deserved (and hopefully good) night of restful sleep.
Good night Troop 270 and Good Night Camp Sequassen!
