Hump Day (Day 4 2025)

Updated: Aug 1

ree

Wednesday was another hot one, but relief is in sight. Scouts were in the thick of their Merit Badge classes, followed in the afternoon with plenty of opportunities to cool off in the water as well as activities late into the evening.

In the morning classes, Henry and Simon got to crawl under a 2004 Toyota Tacoma in Auto Repair class up at STEM. Later that morning, Simon returned to STEM to learn soldering as part of Home Repair. As for Leo, I'm eager to see his horror film for Moviemaking MB class. At the waterfront, Elliott continued his Rowing class while Sandor and Quinten were both in the water. Lastly, over at Scoutcraft, Henry worked on his Shotgun targeting.

In the afternoon MB classes, Simon and Henry completed storyboards for their Photography class and I can't wait to see the final result. At Eco-Lodge, Quinten got to handle some cool fossils in Mammal Study, while nearby at Pisani, Sam and Leo faced off in a couple of games of Chess in their MB class. I watched the first game where Sam achieved a quick advantage with his "triple fork" attack, but Leo came back and the game ended in a draw. Over at Scoutcraft, Logan perfected his Pioneering skills (alongside some of the 870 scouts).

Afternoon MB Classes:

During afternoon free time, several of our scouts were at the waterfront. Henry, Elliott, and Caden enjoyed some sailing and kayaking, while we saw some expert diving by Quinten, Sam, Leo and Liam. Mr. McCoy and I took advantage of free time as well to do some shooting at the Rifle Range and try our hands at knife throwing. See below for some videos of some expert throws by Mr. McCoy. He is our resident expert at our range sports, a sharpshooter with a rifle, a second place finisher in the Scoutmaster Axe Throwing competition, and now a bullseye shot with knives.

Afternoon Free Time:

After dinner, the troop headed over to the Firehose competition. The bucket was not in our favor this day as we were eliminated in the first round, but our scouts were thrilled to compete in this really fun event. We also got to see our 870 Newtown counterparts compete as provisional scouts with another troop. While at the waterfront, Henry and I signed up for the Camp Sequassen Alumni Association, which supports the future enjoyment of all CT Yankee scouts. Later that evening, several of the older scouts and adults attended the Alumni Association afterparty at the Dining Hall for some root beer floats.

We rounded out the day with four of our scouts attending the infamous Hessian Hike while others remained behind to enjoy some quiet card games. Lastly, we wished Elliott the best as he headed out to an overnight under the stars with his Wilderness Survival class, simply armed with a blanket and tarp!

Quiet Time at the Campsite:

Thursday promises to be much cooler (thank goodness!) but also likely a very wet day. We are looking forward to our friendship fire and hopefully seeing the Hoyacks. Speaking of great adult leaders, Thursday morning will mark a transition in adult supervision. Mr. MrCoy and Mr. O'Neil will be leaving camp, to be replaced by Mr. Ladanyi and Mr. Renzi. We are SO immensely thankful to Mr. McCoy and Mr. O'Neil. They did a stellar job in assisting the leaders and scouts throughout the week. Mr. Linnetz and I greatly enjoyed our time with them, some quiet talks, and fun activities. They will be missed.

We are halfway through the week but, while our scouts are likely thinking about home, they are mostly excited for what lies ahead. Thank you to Mr. Linnetz for some amazing pictures from today. Good night Sequassen and good night Newtown.
